چکیده
Volume seven of this distinguished series includes reviews of the following topics in photobiology and photochemistry: Electron spin resonance in photosynthetic systems, by E. C. Weaver and H. E. Weaver; Photochrome, a photochromic sensor, by W. Shropshire; Photosynthetic nitrogen fixation by blue-green algae, by M. B. Allen; The role of light in nitrate metabolism in higher plants, by L. Beevers and R. H. Hageman; Mode of photosensitizing action of furocoumarins, by L. Musajo and G. Rodighiero; Photosensitivity in porphyria, by W. J. Runge; Ultraviolet action and photoreactivation in algae, by P. HalIdal and 0. Taube; Chromosome aberrations induced by ultraviolet radiation, by S. Wolff; Photochemistry of nucleic acids and their constitutents, by A. J. Varghese; and Enzymatic and nonenzymatic bioluminescence, by F. H. Johnson and 0. Shimomura. The topics selected for this volume continue to further the balance and extend the excellent coverage of the photobiology and photochemistry of physiological processes. The reviews are written in a clear and concise form with the major advances in each area being stressed. The major advances are presesented and discussed in adequate relation to background material and this, together with current bibliographical citation, allows persons with a cursory acquaintance with the subject to understand and gain a usable knowledge of the topics presented. This volume, as the others in the series, will be of great value to the researcher, teacher, and advanced student in photobiology.

Molecular cloning, regulation, and complete sequence of a hemocyanin-related, juvenile hormone-suppressible protein from insect hemolymph.
A cDNA library was prepared from mRNA isolated from the lepidopteran Trichoplusia ni during larval-pupal metamorphosis. Differential probing was used to identify clones for mRNAs which are suppressible by exogenous juvenile hormone treatment. In vitro transcribed cRNAs from these clones were translated in vitro and challenged with antiserum specific for a known acidic, juvenile hormone-suppress...
متن کاملBiorational approaches for insect control by enzymatic inhibition.
Conventional insecticides are highly toxic to many living organisms as well as to the environment; consequently, new biorational and more specific approaches to pest control have been developed. In this paper, we present an update of those approaches resulting from studies on inhibition of enzymes involved in key processes of insects life, particularly growth, molting and development of larvae ...
متن کاملA perspective for understanding the modes of juvenile hormone action as a lipid signaling system.
The juvenile hormones of insects regulate an unusually large diversity of processes during postembryonic development and adult reproduction. It is a long-standing puzzle in insect developmental biology and physiology how one hormone can have such diverse effects. The search for molecular mechanisms of juvenile hormone action has been guided by classical models for hormone-receptor interaction. ...
متن کاملThe Photorhabdus Pir toxins are similar to a developmentally regulated insect protein but show no juvenile hormone esterase activity.
The genome of the insect pathogen Photorhabdus luminescens strain TT01 contains numerous genes predicting toxins and proteases. Within the P. luminescens TT01 genome, the products of two loci, plu 4093-plu 4092 and plu 4437-plu 4436, show oral insecticidal activity against both moth and mosquito larvae. The proteins encoded by these loci, here termed 'Photorhabdus insect related' (Pir) proteins...
متن کاملDesign, synthesis, and biological evaluation of new growth inhibitors of Trypanosoma cruzi (epimastigotes).
As a continuation of our project aimed at the search for new chemotherapeutic agents against Chagas' disease, several drugs structurally related to the insect growth regulator Fenoxycarb and the naturally occurring juvenile hormone of insects were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as antiproliferative agents against the parasite responsible of this disease. Isoprenoid derivatives (compounds ...
متن کاملPurification and characterization of the carrier protein for juvenile hormone from the hemolymph of the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta Johannson (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae).
The larval hemolymph of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, contains a carrier protein that binds specifically and with high affinity the juvenile hormone, an important regulator of insect development. This protein serves to transport the hormone and to protect it from the action of degradative enzymes during early larval stages. Using hemolymph from the last larval stage, we have isolated a p...
